Compare the Paperback Unabridged expansion and the Paperback Deluxe base game to see which edition fits your word-building deck game needs.
Quick answer
Choose Paperback Deluxe if you want the complete base game with premium components; choose Paperback Unabridged if you already own the base game and want to expand your card pool.
What each edition delivers
Paperback Deluxe is the full base game with deluxe components: two double-sided stitched playmats, chipboard genre tiles, metal book-shaped trackers, eight foil novel covers, and sleeves. It includes the core word-building deck game where you form words and purchase more powerful letters.
Paperback Unabridged is an expansion for the bestselling word game Paperback. It adds over 100 new cards, including triple letters, typos, asterisks, lowercase letters, and more. It also introduces lowercase letter cards that provide cents when played and fame at the end of the game.
Key trade-off: base game vs expansion
The main difference is that Deluxe is a standalone product with everything you need to play, while Unabridged requires the base Paperback game. If you do not own any version of Paperback, the Deluxe edition gives you the most polished experience out of the box. If you already have the base game, Unabridged offers meaningful variety without buying a second core set.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Content scope: Deluxe gives you the complete base game with deluxe components. Unabridged adds over 100 new cards but requires the base game.
- Component quality: Deluxe includes stitched playmats, metal trackers, and foil covers. Unabridged is a card expansion with no component upgrades. If premium components matter, Deluxe is the clear choice.
- Price point: Deluxe is priced higher (MSRP $65) but is a standalone product. Unabridged is more affordable (MSRP $18) but only adds content. Budget-conscious players who already own the base game get more value from Unabridged.
